American Income's parent company, Torchmark Corporation (NYSE:TMK) has claimed a position on the Forbes Global 2000 list of the world's largest companies. Annual sales of $3.4 billion and assets exceeding $17.2 billion earned the number 1,388 spot on the list for Torchmark.
This annual ranking of the world's biggest companies uses sales, profits, assets and market value to rank companies according to size. This year's rankings span 66 countries.
Torchmark has been profitable for the last eight quarters, and for the last four, profit has risen year-over-year by an average of 15.3%. The largest gain for the company was seen in the fourth quarter of the last fiscal year, when net income swelled by 36.6%. Remembering Bernard Rapoport
In 1951, one man with a vision and $25000 of borrowed capital, started American Income Life Insurance Compny. That man was Bernard Rapoport.
Bernard, known by friends as B, graduated from University of Texas and started a career as a jewelry salesman. It was during this time that a friend introduced B to the insurance industry. In his own words, "I did not think very much of it (the insurance business) until someone explained it to me that if you are an insurance salesperson, there is such a thing as renewals." This concept alone sparked B's inspiration to start American Income Life Insurance Company. Well over 50 years later, AIL has become a leading insurance provider to niche markets internationally.
Sadly, B passed on April 5th 2012. B was an exceptional leader, one whos legacy will live on for generations.
